Taking chances - Kuching, Sarawak.

We received an invitation to be present at one of the conferences being held in Kuching, Sarawak. Even though we have been staying in Malaysia since birth but believe me, we were super excited because it was our first time travelling to Sarawak! Sarawak is also known as 'Bumi Kenyalang' or in English 'Land of the Hornbill'.

Our flight tickets were booked via malaysiaairlines.com 3 months ahead at a very reasonable price; RM270 (return ticket, per head). It was pretty much convenient to fly in MAS since the fare includes in-flight meals and entertainment (for journeys more than 1 hour) and not forgetting the mobile check-in. It was hassle free checking in but the queue was a tad bit long for baggage drop-off in KLIA :(

It was not a week-long trip, unfortunately since we had only 3 days off from work and initially the main reason for coming over to Kuching was to present in the conference. 'Sambil menyelam, minum air', that is the Malay proverb which means 'sipping the water while you dive'. Not letting go the golden opportunity, we made our way to a few places in Kuching.

Pullman Hotel, Kuching.
We stayed for 3 nights in Pullman Hotel, Kuching. It is located about 20 minutes from Kuching International Airport by car. Booking was done through booking.com and we did not only get the best price but also a free upgrade to a Deluxe room! The service was tremendously beyond superb and I had to say that you wouldnt mind to spend a little bit more on the luxurious warm experience. Double thumbs up to Pullman Kuching's dedicated staff :) On top of the great service, Pullman Hotel is attached to Hills Shopping Mall where there are many restaurants and shops.

Rock Road Seafood Restaurant
On the first night, we decided to take a cab to the famous Seafood restaurant, Rock Road Restaurant. We were told by the cab driver that the restaurant's name was taken from name of the road it is situated at which is Rock Road. There is a huge variety of seafood available here; from prawns to squids to fish, crabs, mussels and many more. The price is on the higher side but it is worth paying for the food quality and good service :)

Ting's Cafe (Mee Kolok)
The locals in Kuching usually have mee kolok for their breakfast. Mee kolok is noodles served in soy sauce topped with slices of chicken. We went to Ting's Cafe, right opposite Pullman Hotel which is about 5 minutes walk to have a taste. The serving was very generous and it was priced reasonably, RM5 for a meal.

Mira Cake House
If you are planning to come over to Kuching, you definitely would not want to miss trying out their famous layer cake (kek lapis in Malay). There are several shops selling the layer cake across the riverfront and Mira Cake House is one of them. The bright red-white coloured signboard was the first we saw and we decided to get our layer cakes here (it was out last day in Kuching and we did not intend to walk much ;)). The price ranges from RM10 - RM20 per cake which is less than half of the selling price in Peninsular Malaysia especially Kuala Lumpur. They offer loads of flavours; original, chocolate cheese, Cadbury chocolate, pineapple and more than 50 flavours of which we could not remember them all. Some of the cakes are colourful, which makes the layer cake different from others. But for those who do not fancy colourings, you may opt for the original, cheese, chocolate cheese, Cadbury chocolate flavoured layer cakes which were the ones we bought for our parents :) The cakes are not so sweet and they taste tremendously good! The hardworking cashier will pack your cakes in a box if you purchase more than 4 cakes. So you will not have trouble bringing back these cakes home! :)

The boat we took to cross the river. It is similar to a water taxi and cost you 50cents for a single trip.

The Scenic Colmar Tropicale, Malaysia

Situated 2600 feet (approximately 790m) above sea level, there is a French-themed village called Colmar Tropicale in Bukit Tinggi, Pahang, Malaysia. The inspiration came from the original town of Colmar in Alsace, France. Bukit Tinggi is about 45 minutes drive from Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. If you plan to drive, you need to watch out the slopes as they are really steep. If you need to take the beautiful East-West Karak Highway, drive through the Genting-Sempah tunnel and you will then reach the Genting Highlands exit. Drive on until you could see Exit 805, which is the Bukit Tinggi exit. Take that exit and you will need to drive for another 10km to reach Bukit Tinggi.

Upon entering Colmar Tropicale, you'll need to pay RM12 for the entrance fee for an dult and RM8 for a child. Nevertheless, it is refundable the moment you are checking in to their hotel.

Colmar Tropicale offers many activities. You can just have a walk at the Botanical Garden and enjoy a cup of Japanese green tea at the Japanese Village or challenge yourself for a thrilling recreational activities such as mountain biking or rock climbing.

For hotel reservations, Agoda offers marvelous discounts and promotions everyday which you would never want to miss :)
